Industrial Engineering: Where is it Being Applied?

If there is one engineering field that deals with complex processes and how they can be optimized, that is industrial engineering. Basically, it focuses more on how to develop, improve, implement and evaluate these systems using people, information, money, knowledge, equipment, energy and materials. It also analyzes and synthesizes mathematical, social and physical sciences and integrates such with other engineering methods and principles. This is done to predict the results that can be obtained from these systems.

Industrial engineering somehow overlaps with other disciplines related to the business field. One example of which is operations management. However, one has to take note that the latter is considered a subspecialty of the engineering field. In engineering, mathematical proficiency and quantitative methods are used to study operations management.

Other subspecialties under the industrial engineering field

Apart from operations management, industrial engineering also includes concepts such as management science, systems engineering, operations research and manufacturing engineering. These terms are often used interchangeably with the engineering field. In some cases, there are educational institutions or employee recruiters who make use of either of these terms in order to attract others to enroll or apply and of course, to achieve the difference when compared to other universities, colleges or employers.

Industrial engineers are also expected to have other specialties. Various topics included in the course are financial engineering, engineering management, management science, supply chain management, operations research, process engineering, systems engineering, cost and value engineering, ergonomics, engineering design process and facilities planning. The student may have the option to choose from any of these fields of specialization.

Scope of industrial engineering

Conventionally, this engineering field takes charge of planning factory layouts as well as designing manufacturing paradigms (including assembly lines). Using the term in the past was also somewhat confusing since it was recognized more as a process in manufacturing systems. In other words, people thought that the field is more encompassing of quantitative and methodical approaches that will help optimize system processes and organizational operations. Some universities have transformed it to another term called "production engineering".

In recent studies, however, industrial engineers are working also on elimination of wastes pertaining to time, energy, materials money and other useful industrial resources. Now, it is also included in the concepts of assembling and designing workstations. It may also include tasks such as consultancy and strategy development in operational logistics.

Industrial engineers are also expected to work with new financial algorithms for financial institutions. They also streamline operations for hospital emergency rooms. They plan complicated distribution schemes otherwise known as Supply Chain Management and apply such systems for certain products or materials. Last but not the least – they also develop ideas in shortening of queues in banks, theme parks and hospitals.

Industrial engineering is really a broad term that can be applied to various fields of sciences, finance and medical practice. It can be applied in a wide array of industries. If there is one thing common to all the applications of this field, that will be the fact that industrial engineers make use of discreet event simulation or other computer simulation techniques to analyze, evaluate and optimize systems.
